    Answer

What you are feeling is very honest and spiritually important. In Jain Dharma, Pratikraman is not meant to be only a ritual of words. Its true purpose is to awaken:

    • Repentance for wrong actions, thoughts, and speech
    • Awareness of our mistakes
    • Humility before Arihant, Siddha, Guru, and Dharma
    • A resolve not to repeat those faults

If that feeling is not coming naturally, do not feel guilty. Start with sincerity, even if the emotion is small.

    Explanation

Sometimes people do Pratikraman because it is expected, routine, or family tradition. But as an individual, you can slowly bring feeling into it by doing a few things:

    • Understand the meaning: Try to learn the meaning of the sutras you recite. Feeling grows when understanding grows.
    • Pause and reflect: Before Pratikraman, sit quietly for a minute and ask: “Today, where did I hurt someone by thought, word, or action?”
    • Make it personal: Do not think only of the ritual. Think of real moments: anger, ego, lying, carelessness, harsh words, jealousy, attachment, or violence in small forms.
    • Say Michchhami Dukkadam sincerely: Even if you cannot feel deep emotion, say it with the intention: “May my wrong actions become fruitless.”
    • Focus on one fault: Instead of trying to correct everything at once, choose one weakness and work on it slowly.
    • Do less, but with awareness: A shorter Pratikraman with true attention is spiritually better than a long one done mechanically.

    Spiritual Understanding

In Jain Dharma, the value of Pratikraman comes from bhav — inner feeling and intention. The outer ritual is important, but the inner transformation is the heart of it.

You can begin with a simple inner prayer:

“I may not yet have deep repentance, but I want to become aware. I want to reduce anger, ego, deceit, greed, and carelessness. May I slowly become more pure.”

This honest wish itself is a beginning of true Pratikraman.

Also, do not judge others too much. If others are doing it mechanically, that is their spiritual stage. Your focus should be:

    • How can I become more aware?
    • How can I reduce my own kashays?
    • How can I make my Pratikraman more sincere?

    Takeaway

Do not wait for the feeling to come first. Start with understanding, honesty, and small reflection. Slowly, the feeling will come.

Pratikraman becomes powerful when you move from:

    “I have to do this”

    to

    “I want to purify myself.”
