what is uppameiva, vigameiva, dhuveiva ?

    Answer

Uppāmei vā, Vigamei vā, Dhuvei vā are Jain philosophical terms connected with the nature of reality.

    They mean:

    • Uppāmei vā — it arises / is produced
    • Vigamei vā — it disappears / is destroyed
    • Dhuvei vā — it remains permanent

Together, they express a key Jain principle:

Every real substance has origination, destruction, and permanence at the same time.

    Explanation

In Jain Dharma, reality is understood through Dravya and Paryāya:

    • Dravya means substance — the underlying reality.
    • Paryāya means mode or state — the changing condition of that substance.

A substance remains permanent as a substance, but its modes keep changing.

    So:

    • A new state arises — uppāda
    • An old state ends — vyaya
    • The substance itself continues — dhrauvya

For example, gold may become a ring, then a chain, then a coin. The forms change, but the gold-substance continues.

Similarly, the soul’s states change due to karma, knowledge, passions, purity, and impurity, but the soul as a substance remains eternal.

    Spiritual Understanding

This teaching helps us understand Jain reality without one-sided thinking.

Jain Dharma says things are not only permanent and not only changing. They are:

    • Permanent from the viewpoint of substance
    • Changing from the viewpoint of modes

This is closely related to Anekāntavāda, the Jain doctrine of many-sided truth.

    Takeaway

Uppāmei vā, Vigamei vā, Dhuvei vā teaches that a real thing is continuously changing in its forms, while remaining permanent in its essential substance. This is a central Jain understanding of reality.
