Answer
If a person cannot do upvaas due to health, age, weakness, work situation, pregnancy, medical condition, or any genuine limitation, Jain Dharma does not force them to harm the body.
They can do other forms of tapasya and self-control according to their capacity.
Explanation
Instead of upvaas, one may do:
- Ekāsan – eating only once in the day
- Biyāsan – eating two times in the day
- Āyambil – eating simple, tasteless food once
- Unodari – eating less than one’s full appetite
- Chauvihar – not eating or drinking after sunset
- Tivihar – avoiding food after sunset, but water may be allowed as per practice
- Giving up favorite foods – such as sweets, fried food, snacks, etc.
- Reducing attachment – eating simple food without craving
- Doing more samayik, pratikraman, swadhyay, or mantra jaap
Spiritual Understanding
In Jain Dharma, tapasya is not only about not eating. The true purpose is to reduce raag-dwesh, control desires, increase awareness, and purify the soul.
If someone cannot fast physically but practices with sincerity, humility, and self-control, that also has spiritual value.
Takeaway
If you cannot do upvaas, do not feel guilty. Do what is suitable for your body and situation, but do it with bhav, discipline, and devotion. In Jain Dharma, inner purity is most important.
