what does Jainism teach about karma and destiny

    2 hrs ago 1

    Answer

Jainism teaches that karma shapes destiny, but does not make us helpless.

According to Jain Dharma, every soul is inherently pure, knowledgeable, and blissful. But due to karmas accumulated through thoughts, words, and actions, the soul experiences birth, death, happiness, sorrow, limitations, and worldly conditions.

So, what people often call “destiny” is largely the result of previously bound karma. However, Jainism strongly teaches that through right faith, right knowledge, right conduct, self-discipline, repentance, tapasya, and spiritual effort, one can reduce, destroy, and stop new karmas.

    Explanation

    In Jain philosophy:

    • Karma is a real subtle matter that attaches to the soul because of passions such as anger, pride, deceit, greed, attachment, and hatred.
    • Past karma influences present circumstances, such as birth, body, lifespan, status, pleasure, pain, and abilities.
    • Present effort creates future results. Every thought, word, and action has karmic consequences.
    • Destiny is not permanent. It is the unfolding of karma, but the soul has the power to change its future through spiritual effort.

Jainism does not support the idea that everything is controlled by God or fate. Jain Dharma teaches that the soul itself is responsible for its bondage and liberation.

    Spiritual Understanding

This teaching gives both responsibility and hope.

    • If we suffer, Jainism encourages us not to blame others, God, or fate.
    • If we experience happiness, we should not become proud or attached.
    • In every situation, we should remain aware, peaceful, and careful in our conduct.

By practicing Ahimsa, Satya, Aparigraha, forgiveness, humility, meditation, and self-restraint, one stops the inflow of new karma and gradually removes old karma.

    Takeaway

In Jainism, destiny is the fruit of past karma, but the future is shaped by present awareness and effort. The soul is not a victim of fate; it has the power to become free through right spiritual practice.
