    How did mahavir revived jainism

    an hour ago 2

    Answer

Mahavir Swami did not “create” Jainism; he revived, strengthened, and re-established the ancient Jain Dharma for his time. In Jain tradition, he is the 24th Tirthankar of the present time cycle, following Bhagwan Parshvanath, the 23rd Tirthankar.

    He revived Jainism by:

    • Re-establishing the path of right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.
    • Teaching the five great vows: Ahimsa, Satya, Achaurya, Brahmacharya, and Aparigraha.
    • Organizing the Jain community into the fourfold sangh: monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen.
    • Emphasizing self-discipline, compassion, non-violence, and liberation of the soul.
    • Teaching in the language understood by ordinary people, making the path accessible.

    Explanation

Before Mahavir Swami, Jain Dharma already existed through earlier Tirthankars, especially Bhagwan Parshvanath. However, over time, spiritual practice needed renewal and clearer discipline.

Mahavir Swami performed deep tapasya, attained keval jnan—perfect knowledge—and then taught the path to moksha. His teachings gave Jain society a strong ethical and spiritual structure.

One important contribution was the emphasis on the complete form of the five vows:

    • Ahimsa – non-violence in thought, speech, and action
    • Satya – truthfulness
    • Achaurya – not stealing
    • Brahmacharya – celibacy or purity of conduct
    • Aparigraha – non-possessiveness

For monks and nuns, these became Mahavrats, the great vows. For householders, they were practiced in a limited form as Anuvrats.

    Spiritual Understanding

Mahavir Swami’s revival of Jain Dharma was not political or social in the ordinary sense. It was a deep spiritual reawakening. He reminded people that every soul is capable of becoming pure, free, and liberated.

His central message was that liberation is achieved not through rituals alone, but through:

    • Self-control
    • Compassion for all living beings
    • Freedom from attachment and hatred
    • Destruction of karma through right conduct and tapasya

    Takeaway

Mahavir Swami revived Jainism by restoring the ancient path of non-violence, self-discipline, and liberation, and by organizing a living spiritual community that could preserve and practice Jain Dharma for future generations.
