Difference between khartargachh and tapagachh pratikaman

    2 hrs ago 1

    Answer

In essence, Khartargachh Pratikraman and Tapagachh Pratikraman have the same spiritual purpose: repentance, self-purification, forgiveness, and renewal of right conduct.

The main differences are usually in:

    • Gachh tradition and lineage
    • Order of certain recitations
    • Pronunciation and chanting style
    • Some added or omitted traditional passages
    • Local practice followed by monks, nuns, and laypeople of that gacch

The core Jain principles of Pratikraman remain the same.

    Explanation

Khartargachh and Tapagachh are two respected Śvetāmbara Mūrtipūjak Jain traditions. Both follow the path of the Tirthankars, Jain Agams, vows, repentance, and spiritual discipline.

In daily or ritual Pratikraman, both traditions generally include key elements such as:

    • Samayik – entering equanimity
    • Chaturvimshati Stavan – praise of the 24 Tirthankars
    • Vandan – reverence to sadhus/sadhvis
    • Pratikraman Sutras – reflection on faults and repentance
    • Kāyotsarg – meditation through bodily stillness
    • Pratyākhyān – renunciation or resolve for discipline
    • Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ – seeking forgiveness

However, the exact printed Pratikraman book used in Khartargachh may not be identical to the one used in Tapagachh. Differences can appear in certain sutras, traditional compositions, guru-vandan method, tune, wording conventions, and sequence.

    Spiritual Understanding

From the Jain point of view, the most important part of Pratikraman is not the external difference of gacch, but the inner feeling of:

    • Ālochana – honest confession of faults
    • Pratikraman – turning back from wrong actions
    • Pratyākhyān – resolving not to repeat them
    • Kṣamā – forgiveness toward all living beings
    • Samata – equanimity

So, a person should generally follow the Pratikraman tradition taught by their own guru, family tradition, or local sangh, with faith and proper understanding.

    Takeaway

Khartargachh and Tapagachh Pratikraman differ mainly in tradition-based details, not in the core purpose. Both aim at purification of the soul through repentance, forgiveness, discipline, and awareness.
