    Adhinath Bhagwan stories

    one year ago 193

Adhinath Bhagwan, also known as Rishabhanatha, is revered as the first Tirthankara in Jainism. His life and stories hold great significance in Jain tradition. Here are some important stories and aspects related to Adhinath Bhagwan:

    Birth and Early Life

    • Birth: Rishabhanatha was born to King Nabhiraja and Queen Marudevi in the ancient city of Ayodhya. His birth is celebrated as a divine event, with many auspicious signs accompanying it.
    • Name: He was named Rishabha because, according to Jain tradition, he exhibited the qualities of a strong and gentle bull (Rishabha).

    Introduction of Civilization

    • First King and Lawgiver: Rishabhanatha is credited with introducing the basic institutions of society. Before his time, people lived a primitive and nomadic life. He taught people how to cultivate land, cook food, build houses, and organize society.
    • Establishing Professions: He is said to have divided society into various professions and trained people in 72 arts and crafts, bringing order and progress to human civilization.

    Family

    • Sons and Daughters: Rishabhanatha had 101 sons, the most famous being Bharata (who became the first Chakravartin, or universal emperor) and Bahubali (known for his meditation and victory over ego). He also had two daughters, Brahmi and Sundari, to whom he taught writing and mathematics, respectively.

    Renunciation and Attainment of Kevalgyan

    • Renunciation: After a long and successful reign, Rishabhanatha renounced his kingdom and worldly life, becoming a monk and practicing severe penance and meditation.
    • First Monk: He is considered the first person to take diksha (initiation) and become a Jain monk in this era.
    • Kevalgyan: After intense spiritual practices, he attained Kevalgyan (omniscience).

    The Ahar (Alms) Story

    • First Ahar: As an ascetic, Rishabhanatha fasted for months because people did not know how to offer food to a monk. Eventually, his great-grandson, Shreyans Kumar, understood how to offer alms properly and offered him sugarcane juice. This event is commemorated as the first Ahar and marks the origin of the Jain practice of offering food to monks.

    Nirvana

    • Liberation: Rishabhanatha achieved Nirvana (liberation) on Mount Ashtapad.

    Symbol and Representation

    • Symbol: The bull (Rishabha) is his emblem.
    • Depiction: He is usually depicted in a meditative pose with long hair falling on his shoulders.

    Importance in Jainism

    • He laid the foundation for Jain philosophy and the practice of non-violence (ahimsa), truth (satya), and other virtues.
    • His life inspires Jains to live a disciplined, compassionate, and spiritual life.

These stories from Adhinath Bhagwan's life are celebrated in Jain scriptures such as the "Adipurana" and are an integral part of Jain culture and teachings.
