Why is it that I read that the first few thirthakars were super huge giants

    Answer

In Jain tradition, the early Tirthankars are described as having extremely large bodies because they lived in a very different time-cycle, when human height, lifespan, strength, and purity were far greater than they are today.

Jain Dharma teaches that time moves through vast cycles of rise and decline. The first few Tirthankars appeared in earlier, more prosperous ages of the current descending half-cycle, when human beings were naturally much taller, stronger, and longer-lived.

    Explanation

According to Jain cosmology, time is divided into two repeating halves:

    • Utsarpini — ascending time-cycle, when conditions gradually improve
    • Avasarpini — descending time-cycle, when conditions gradually decline

We are currently in the Avasarpini, the descending cycle.

The 24 Tirthankars of our present cycle appeared during this descending era. The earlier Tirthankars, such as Bhagwan Rishabhdev, Ajitnath, Sambhavnath, and others, lived in much earlier ages, when Jain scriptures describe humans as extraordinarily tall and long-lived.

As the time-cycle continued to decline:

    • Human height decreased
    • Lifespan decreased
    • Physical strength decreased
    • Spiritual discipline became harder
    • Society became more complex and less pure

By the time of Bhagwan Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankar, human height and lifespan were much closer to what we understand historically.

    Spiritual Understanding

The descriptions of very large bodies are not meant simply to make the Tirthankars seem physically impressive. In Jain Dharma, they reflect the vast scale of cosmic time and the gradual decline of worldly conditions.

    The deeper message is:

    • The soul itself is eternal and not limited by body size.
    • Even beings with great strength, beauty, and long life must still overcome karma.
    • True greatness is not physical size, but liberation from attachment, ego, anger, pride, deceit, and greed.

So, although the early Tirthankars are described as “giant” in body, their true greatness lies in becoming Jina — conquerors of inner enemies — and showing the path to moksha.

    Takeaway

You read that the first few Tirthankars were extremely huge because Jain cosmology places them in an earlier age of the descending time-cycle, when humans were naturally much larger and longer-lived. The main Jain lesson is that spiritual greatness is not about bodily size, but about purity of the soul and liberation from karma.
