    Explanation

Pratikraman is not only a recitation sequence. It is a spiritual process of:

    • Ālochana — admitting one’s faults,
    • Pratikraman — turning back from wrong conduct,
    • Pratyākhyān — resolving not to repeat faults,
    • Kāyotsarga — detaching from the body and focusing on the soul,
    • Kṣamāpanā — asking forgiveness from all beings.

    Types of Pratikraman

    • Devasi Pratikraman — evening repentance for faults committed during the day.
    • Rāī Pratikraman — morning repentance for faults committed during the night.
    • Pakṣik Pratikraman — fortnightly.
    • Chaumāsī Pratikraman — once every four months.
    • Saṃvatsarī Pratikraman — yearly, the most important for laypeople.

    Spiritual Understanding

The heart of Pratikraman is not mechanical recitation, but sincere inner transformation. A person looks within and thinks:

    • Where did I hurt living beings?
    • Where did I speak harshly or falsely?
    • Where did I act with anger, pride, deceit, or greed?
    • How can I become more careful, humble, and non-violent?

    Takeaway

The chronology of Pratikraman guides the soul from reverence, to confession, to repentance, to renunciation, and finally to forgiveness and purification. Its true purpose is to reduce karmic bondage and return the soul toward its natural purity.
