Story of shrut paanchami as per digamber ksĥastra in english

    10 months ago 332

Shrut Panchami is an important festival in Jainism, primarily observed by the Digambar sect. It is dedicated to revering Jain scriptures (Shastras), especially the sacred texts called "Shrut" (scriptures or knowledge). Here is the story and significance of Shrut Panchami as per Digambar Jain tradition:

    Story and Significance:

After the nirvana of Lord Mahavira, the knowledge of Jain Agamas (scriptures) started to diminish as time passed. A severe famine occurred in Magadha, leading to the dispersal of Jain monks and the loss of oral transmission of the scriptures. To preserve the remaining knowledge, great efforts were made by Jain Acharyas.

Shrut Panchami is celebrated in memory of the day when the revered Acharya Pushpadant and Acharya Bhutabali completed the redaction and composition of the "Shatkhandagam," one of the most important and ancient Jain scriptures available in the Digambar tradition. The Shatkhandagam, meaning "Scripture in Six Parts," is considered equivalent to the lost original Jain Agamas and is highly revered. It was compiled from the teachings of Lord Mahavira, as remembered and collected by the early Acharyas.

    Events commemorated:

    • The festival occurs on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Jyeshtha (May-June).
    • On this day, Acharya Pushpadant and Acharya Bhutabali completed the Shatkhandagam, thus ensuring the preservation of Jain philosophy and teachings for future generations.

    Rituals:

    • Jain temples and libraries organize special worship (puja) of Jain scriptures.
    • Devotees clean and decorate the scriptures, perform abhishek (ritual bathing), and recite or listen to sacred texts.
    • Discourses (pravachans) are organized on the importance of Jain scriptures and their preservation.

    Cultural Importance:

    • The festival emphasizes the value of scriptural knowledge (Shrut Jnana) in attaining right faith and conduct.
    • It also reminds followers of the great efforts by Acharyas to preserve Jain teachings despite hardships.

Summary: Shrut Panchami, as per Digambar Jain tradition, commemorates the completion of the Shatkhandagam by Acharya Pushpadant and Acharya Bhutabali. It is a day dedicated to paying respect to Jain scriptures and recognizing their central role in guiding the spiritual lives of Jains.
