How many chovisis do we know?

    4 hrs ago 2

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, we commonly know 3 Chovisis:

    • Past Chovisi – 24 Tirthankars of the previous time cycle
    • Present Chovisi – 24 Tirthankars of the current time cycle
    • Future Chovisi – 24 Tirthankars of the coming time cycle

So, we know 72 Tirthankars in total across these 3 Chovisis.

    Explanation

The word Chovisi means a group of 24 Tirthankars. In the Jain time cycle, 24 Tirthankars appear in each half-cycle where Tirthankar Bhagwans arise.

The most commonly worshipped and studied is the Present Chovisi, which includes:

    • Shri Rushabhdev Bhagwan
    • Shri Ajitnath Bhagwan
    • Shri Sambhavnath Bhagwan
    • Shri Abhinandan Swami
    • Shri Sumatinath Bhagwan
    • Shri Padmaprabh Swami
    • Shri Suparshvanath Bhagwan
    • Shri Chandraprabh Swami
    • Shri Suvidhinath / Pushpadant Bhagwan
    • Shri Shitalnath Bhagwan
    • Shri Shreyansnath Bhagwan
    • Shri Vasupujya Swami
    • Shri Vimalnath Bhagwan
    • Shri Anantnath Bhagwan
    • Shri Dharmanath Bhagwan
    • Shri Shantinath Bhagwan
    • Shri Kunthunath Bhagwan
    • Shri Aranath Bhagwan
    • Shri Mallinath Bhagwan
    • Shri Munisuvrat Swami
    • Shri Naminath Bhagwan
    • Shri Neminath Bhagwan
    • Shri Parshvanath Bhagwan
    • Shri Mahavir Swami Bhagwan

    Takeaway

A Chovisi means 24 Tirthankars. Jain tradition commonly teaches the Past, Present, and Future Chovisi, making 3 Chovisis known to us.
