Story of shrut paanchami as per digamber ksĥastra in english with photos

Shrut Panchami is an important festival in Jainism, especially among the Digambar tradition. Here is the story of Shrut Panchami as per Digambar Jain scriptures (ksĥastra):

Story of Shrut Panchami (Digambar Tradition):

Meaning of Shrut Panchami: "Shrut" means scriptural knowledge, and "Panchami" means the fifth day (of the lunar fortnight). Shrut Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of the bright half of the month of Jyeshtha (May–June).

Significance: This day is celebrated to honor the preservation and propagation of Jain scriptures (āgamas & shastras), especially the works of Acharya Pushpadant and Acharya Bhutabali, who composed the great Jain text "Shatkhandāgam".

Historical Background: After Bhagwan Mahavira’s nirvana, his teachings were orally preserved by his disciples known as Ganadharas. Over time, due to calamities and loss of memory among monks, much of the original knowledge was lost.

Acharya Dharasena, in the 1st century CE, entrusted the task of writing down the remaining knowledge to his disciples, Acharya Pushpadant and Acharya Bhutabali, in a cave at Mount Girnar. They composed the "Shatkhandāgam" (‘Six Parts Scripture’), which is among the oldest and most revered texts in the Digambar tradition.

This event is remembered and celebrated as Shrut Panchami, the "Birthday of Shastras".

    Rituals:

    • On Shrut Panchami, Jains perform shastra-pujan (worship of scriptures) in temples and homes.
    • Sacred texts like Shatkhandāgam, Niyamasara, Samayasara, and other Digambar scriptures are respectfully cleaned, anointed, and worshipped.
    • Devotees reflect on the importance of scriptural knowledge and resolve to study and preserve it.

Key Message: Shrut Panchami reminds Jains of the importance of scriptural knowledge (shruta-jnana) and encourages the study and reverence of Jain literature.

Photos: I’m unable to provide photos directly, but here are suggestions for images you can search for:

    • Shatkhandāgam manuscript or cover
    • Image of Acharya Pushpadant and Acharya Bhutabali (often depicted together, sometimes with a cave in the background)
    • Shastra-pujan ceremony in a Digambar Jain temple
    • Jain monks reading or teaching scriptures

You can search these terms online to find appropriate photos.

    Summary Table:
