What can I do during Daslakshan parv?

    10 months ago 436

During Daslakshan Parv (also known as Paryushan in the Svetambara tradition), Jains focus on spiritual upliftment, self-purification, and reflection on the ten supreme virtues (Das Lakshan). Here are some practices and activities observed during this sacred period:

    1. Introspection and Self-Discipline

    • Reflect deeply on your actions, thoughts, and intentions.
    • Practice self-restraint (samyama), minimizing desires and attachments.

    2. Observing the Ten Virtues

Each day is dedicated to one of the ten virtues:
    1. Uttam Kshama (Supreme Forgiveness)
    2. Uttam Mardava (Supreme Humility)
    3. Uttam Arjava (Supreme Straightforwardness)
    4. Uttam Shaucha (Supreme Contentment/Purity)
    5. Uttam Satya (Supreme Truthfulness)
    6. Uttam Sanyam (Supreme Self-restraint)
    7. Uttam Tap (Supreme Austerity)
    8. Uttam Tyag (Supreme Renunciation)
    9. Uttam Akinchanya (Supreme Non-attachment)
    10. Uttam Brahmacharya (Supreme Celibacy/Chastity)

Study, contemplate, and try to imbibe these virtues in daily life.

    3. Fasting and Dietary Restrictions

    • Undertake fasting as per your capacity (full fast, ekasana—one meal a day, or upvas).
    • Follow stricter dietary rules to minimize himsa (violence) and accumulate punya (merit).

    4. Prayers and Rituals

    • Participate in daily Pratikraman (ritual of repentance and reflection).
    • Attend or listen to discourses (pravachans) on Jain scriptures and teachings.
    • Engage in Samayik (meditative practice to attain equanimity).

    5. Forgiveness and Reconciliation

    • Seek forgiveness from all beings for any harm caused knowingly or unknowingly, especially on the final day (Kshamavani/Michhami Dukkadam).
    • Forgive others and let go of grudges.

    6. Charity and Compassion

    • Perform acts of charity (daan) and service (seva).
    • Practice ahimsa (non-violence) in thought, word, and deed.

    7. Scripture Study

    • Read and reflect on Jain scriptures like the Tattvartha Sutra, Kalpasutra, and others relevant to the festival.

    8. Community Participation

    • Join temple activities and community gatherings (sangh).
    • Support each other in spiritual practices and growth.

By sincerely observing these practices, you align yourself with the core principles of Jainism and move towards spiritual purification during Daslakshan Parv.
