If eating non veg is npt allowed, then why do we kill plants like wheat and eat?
Answer
In Jain Dharma, the ideal is not to harm any living being. But for survival, a householder cannot live without some food. So Jainism teaches us to choose food that causes the least possible violence.
Eating non-veg involves killing or supporting the killing of five-sensed beings such as animals, birds, and fish. Eating grains like wheat involves harm to one-sensed plant life. Both involve himsa, but the level of himsa is not the same.
Explanation
Jain Dharma classifies living beings according to senses:
- One-sensed beings: plants, earth-bodied, water-bodied, fire-bodied, air-bodied beings
- Two to five-sensed beings: worms, insects, animals, birds, humans, etc.
A five-sensed being has a much more developed body, mind, fear, pain, attachment, and desire to live. Killing such a being creates much heavier karma.
Plants also have life, so Jainism does not say eating plants is completely violence-free. Instead, it says:
- avoid unnecessary violence,
- avoid greater violence,
- eat with restraint,
- do not eat for taste and greed,
- choose food that involves minimum harm.
This is why Jains avoid meat, fish, eggs, honey, and also many root vegetables in traditional practice, because they involve greater harm.
Spiritual Understanding
The Jain principle is Ahimsa Paramo Dharma — non-violence is the highest dharma.
But for householders, Jain Dharma gives a practical path: reduce violence as much as possible while living responsibly. That is why eating wheat or grains is permitted for householders, but eating non-veg is avoided because it causes much more intense and deliberate violence.
Also, grains like wheat are generally taken after the plant has completed its cycle and produced seeds, whereas meat requires the direct killing of mobile, higher-sensed beings.
Takeaway
Jainism does not say plant food is completely free from himsa. It teaches us to choose the path of minimum himsa. Non-veg involves much greater violence, so it is not allowed, while simple vegetarian food is accepted as the least harmful way for householders to survive.
