If eating non veg is not allowed, then why do we kill plants like wheat and eat?

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, eating is guided by the principle of Ahimsa — minimizing harm as much as possible.

Jainism teaches that plants also have life, so eating wheat, rice, fruits, vegetables, etc. does involve some harm. But human beings cannot live without food. Therefore, Jain Dharma guides us to choose food that causes the least violence.

Eating non-veg involves much greater violence because animals are higher-sensed living beings and experience more pain and fear. Plant foods generally involve harm to one-sensed beings, so they are considered a lesser form of violence.

    Explanation

According to Jain philosophy, living beings are classified by the number of senses:

    • One-sensed beings: earth-bodied, water-bodied, fire-bodied, air-bodied, and plant-bodied beings
    • Two to five-sensed beings: worms, insects, birds, animals, humans, etc.

Plants are living beings, but they are generally considered one-sensed. Animals are five-sensed beings and have a more developed capacity to suffer.

So Jain Dharma does not say, “Plants have no life.” Rather, it says:

    • Do not harm any living being unnecessarily.
    • If harm is unavoidable for survival, keep it to the minimum.
    • Avoid foods that involve greater violence.

This is why non-vegetarian food is prohibited, while carefully chosen vegetarian food is allowed for householders.

    Spiritual Understanding

Jain Dharma is not based on convenience; it is based on reducing violence step by step.

Even while eating vegetarian food, Jains are taught to remain mindful:

    • Do not waste food.
    • Do not eat for greed or taste alone.
    • Avoid root vegetables in stricter Jain practice because they may involve destroying many living organisms.
    • Eat with gratitude and restraint.

The goal is not to claim that vegetarian food is completely violence-free. The goal is to live with the least possible himsa.

    Takeaway

Jainism prohibits non-veg because it causes intense harm to higher-sensed beings. Eating plants also involves harm, but it is considered a lesser and unavoidable form of violence for survival. Jain Dharma teaches us to minimize harm, not to justify violence.
