my social media addiction attchement is so so so strong that even if I listen a preaching read listen the very next moment I will start using it even in paryushan for only 8 days wherein we have to actually learn to reduce it I am not being able to do it
Answer
What you are describing is not a small habit; it has become a strong attachment. In Jain Dharma, the first step is not hatred toward yourself, but honest awareness.
Yes, you still have time for Alochana. Alochana is not cancelled because mistakes are many. In fact, when mistakes are many, Alochana becomes even more necessary.
Do not think: “My mistakes will overpower my Alochana.” Think: “Each sincere Alochana weakens the force of my mistakes and strengthens my awareness.”
Explanation
In Jain Dharma, falling again and again does not mean the soul is hopeless. The soul has the capacity for purity, but it is covered by attachment, carelessness, and passions.
Social media attachment works like this:
- First, the mind gets pulled.
- Then awareness becomes weak.
- Then the action happens almost automatically.
- After that, guilt comes.
- Then guilt creates more weakness, and the cycle repeats.
So the solution is not only “I will never use it again.” The solution is to create a pause between impulse and action.
Even a small pause is spiritual progress.
For example, when the urge comes, do this:
- Stop for 10 seconds.
- Say internally: “This is attachment, not my true self.”
- Take 3 slow breaths.
- Then decide: “Can I delay it by 5 minutes?”
If you delay for even 5 minutes, that is not failure. That is victory over complete helplessness.
About Alochana
Alochana means sincerely admitting one’s faults with humility and desire to improve. It is not meant to make you drown in shame.
Your Alochana can be simple:
- “I became careless.”
- “I gave in to attachment.”
- “I forgot my spiritual goal.”
- “I sincerely wish to become more aware.”
- “May I reduce this weakness step by step.”
Do not wait to become perfect before doing Alochana. Alochana is for the imperfect seeker who wants to purify.
For Paryushan
During Paryushan, instead of making a huge vow that breaks immediately, take a smaller but firm vow.
For example:
- No Instagram for the first 30 minutes after waking up.
- No social media during Pratikraman, Samayik, Swadhyay, or listening to pravachan.
- Keep the phone outside the room during spiritual activity.
- Before opening Instagram, say one Navkar Mantra with awareness.
- Reduce one specific harmful pattern, such as reels at night.
The aim is not to impress anyone. The aim is to reduce attachment honestly.
If “reducing some time each day” is not happening, then do not fight only with willpower. Change the environment:
- Remove Instagram from the home screen.
- Log out after each use.
- Keep the phone away during religious study.
- Use grayscale mode if it reduces attraction.
- Ask one trusted family member or friend to help you during Paryushan.
This is not weakness. This is practical saiyam.
Spiritual Understanding
In Jain Dharma, bondage happens through attachment and carelessness. But purification happens through awareness, repentance, restraint, and renewed effort.
A person who falls but keeps awakening is spiritually alive.
A person who says, “Now nothing can be done,” becomes trapped by despair. Despair is also harmful because it stops effort.
Please remember:
- Your mistakes are not stronger than the soul’s potential.
- Your past carelessness does not destroy the value of present awareness.
- One sincere moment of turning inward matters.
- Small restraint done sincerely is better than a big promise broken with frustration.
Takeaway
Do not aim for instant perfection. Aim for honest reduction, sincere Alochana, and one pause before each impulse.
Even if you fall 100 times, do Alochana 101 times and restart.
In Jain Dharma, the path is walked through repeated awakening. The important thing is: do not give up on your soul.
