Why do we take samayak? What is meaning behind it? What do we do in it?

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, we take Samayik to become steady in the nature of the soul and to practice equanimity.

The word Samayik comes from samata, meaning a state of balance, calmness, and equal-mindedness.

During Samayik, a person temporarily gives up worldly activities and tries to remain like a sadhu or sadhvi for a fixed period, traditionally about 48 minutes.

    Meaning Behind Samayik

    Samayik means:

    • To become calm and balanced in mind
    • To reduce attachment and hatred
    • To remember the true nature of the soul
    • To avoid sinful activities of body, speech, and mind
    • To practice forgiveness, humility, and self-control

In ordinary life, our mind keeps running toward likes, dislikes, anger, pride, greed, jealousy, and desires. Samayik is a sacred pause from all this. It is a time to turn inward.

What Do We Do in Samayik?

    During Samayik, one generally:

    • Takes a vow to remain in equanimity for the period of Samayik
    • Sits in a clean and peaceful place
    • Recites Jain sutras, stavans, or prayers
    • Does meditation or contemplation on the soul
    • Practices forgiveness toward all living beings
    • Avoids unnecessary talking, movement, eating, drinking, and worldly work
    • Controls body, speech, and mind
    • Reflects on non-violence, detachment, and right conduct

The exact ritual method may vary slightly among Jain traditions, but the inner purpose is the same: to become peaceful, pure, and spiritually aware.

    Spiritual Understanding

Samayik is not only a ritual. It is a training of the soul.

For that period, we try to live with:

    • Ahimsa – non-violence
    • Samata – equanimity
    • Sanyam – self-restraint
    • Jagruti – awareness
    • Vairagya – detachment

A householder cannot always live like a monk, but during Samayik, they practice monk-like discipline for a short time. This helps reduce karmic bondage and strengthens the path toward liberation.

    Takeaway

We take Samayik to step away from worldly passions and come closer to the soul.

    Its true meaning is:

“For this time, I will remain peaceful, balanced, non-violent, and aware of my soul.”
