What is the prayashchit if someone drinks sachit water instead of boiled achit water during upvaas

    2 hrs ago 1

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, if someone accidentally drinks sachit water during upvaas, the proper course is to do alochana before a knowledgeable Guru / Sādhu-Sādhvī Bhagwant and follow the prāyaścitta they prescribe.

There is no single universal prāyaścitta that should be declared for everyone, because it depends on factors such as:

    • Whether it was done knowingly or unknowingly
    • How much water was consumed
    • Whether the person remembered the rule at the time
    • The person’s vow, sampradāy, and guidance from their Guru

    Explanation

During upvaas, one should take only permitted achit / boiled water according to the rules being observed. Drinking sachit water is considered a fault because Jain conduct gives great importance to avoiding harm to living beings present in unboiled water.

If it happened by mistake, the person should:

    • Feel sincere repentance without hiding the fault
    • Do Michchhāmi Dukkaḍaṃ with humility
    • Perform alochana to a Guru if possible
    • Follow the Guru-given prāyaścitta
    • Be more careful in future

    Spiritual Understanding

In Jain Dharma, prāyaścitta is not meant as punishment. It is a way to purify the soul through:

    • Awareness of the mistake
    • Repentance
    • Confession
    • Renewed discipline
    • Carefulness in ahiṃsā

If the mistake was truly accidental, one should not fall into guilt or despair. Instead, one should humbly accept the mistake and strengthen future vigilance.

    Takeaway

For drinking sachit water during upvaas, do alochana, say Michchhāmi Dukkaḍaṃ, and take the exact prāyaścitta from your Guru. The most important thing is sincere repentance and greater care in following ahiṃsā.
