- To ask forgiveness from all living beings
- To forgive all living beings
- To take a firm resolve not to repeat those faults
- To purify one’s thoughts, words, and actions
Bhaav Pratikraman
With folded hands and a humble heart, one may reflect:
O Arihant Bhagwan, Siddha Bhagwan, Acharya Bhagwant, Upadhyay Bhagwant, and all Sadhus and Sadhvis, I bow with devotion.
During this day, this life, and countless past moments, I may have committed many faults through mind, speech, and body. I may have hurt living beings knowingly or unknowingly. I may have spoken harsh words, entertained anger, pride, deceit, greed, attachment, jealousy, ego, or carelessness.
For all such wrong actions, wrong words, and wrong thoughts, I sincerely repent.
Micchami Dukkadam.
I ask forgiveness from all living beings. May all living beings forgive me. I forgive all living beings. I have friendship with all, enmity with none.
May my soul turn away from sin, violence, falsehood, stealing, impurity, possessiveness, anger, ego, deceit, greed, attachment, and aversion.
May I develop right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct. May I walk on the path shown by the Tirthankars. May my thoughts become pure, my speech become gentle, and my actions become non-violent.
I sincerely resolve to become more careful, more compassionate, more forgiving, and more aware.
Micchami Dukkadam.
Spiritual Understanding
In Jain Dharma, true Pratikraman is not only a ritual recitation. Its deepest value is inner transformation.
The word Pratikraman means “returning back” — returning from wrong conduct to right conduct, from carelessness to awareness, and from passions to purity.
Bhaav Pratikraman helps the soul reduce the burden of negative karma by cultivating:
- Repentance for faults
- Forgiveness toward others
- Humility before the enlightened ones
- Awareness of one’s inner weaknesses
- A sincere intention to improve
Takeaway
Bhaav Pratikraman is the inner heart of Pratikraman. Even if one does not know all the formal sutras, sincere repentance, forgiveness, and resolve for self-purification are deeply meaningful in Jain Dharma.
