why is sneezing not allowed in chaudas pratikaman

    an hour ago 3

    Answer

In Chaudas Pratikraman, sneezing itself is not considered a “sin” or something purposely forbidden. But during Pratikraman, one is expected to maintain maximum purity, attention, and discipline of body, speech, and mind.

If sneezing happens, it is treated as a disturbance because:

    • It breaks concentration during sacred recitation.
    • It may interrupt the flow of sutras, mantras, or repentance.
    • It can disturb others doing Pratikraman.
    • It may involve bodily impurity such as saliva or nasal discharge.

    Explanation

Chaudas Pratikraman is especially important because it is done on the 14th day, before Pakkhi, Chaumasi, or Samvatsari observances depending on the time. It is a time for deeper repentance, self-examination, and purification.

In Jain practice, sacred activities are done with:

    • Ekāgratā — focused attention
    • Vinay — reverence
    • Shuddhi — purity
    • Saṃyam — self-control

Sneezing is involuntary, so Jain Dharma does not blame a person for it as intentional wrongdoing. But if it happens, one should calmly regain composure, maintain cleanliness, and continue with devotion.

    Spiritual Understanding

The deeper point is not “sneezing is bad.” The deeper point is that Pratikraman is a sacred act of returning the soul toward awareness. Anything that creates carelessness, distraction, or impurity is avoided as much as possible.

So the discipline around sneezing teaches alertness, respect, and inner steadiness.

    Takeaway

Sneezing is not morally wrong if it happens naturally. It is discouraged during Chaudas Pratikraman because Pratikraman should be performed with purity, concentration, and reverence.
