Story of bhadrabahu swami n varahamihira

    2 hrs ago 2

    Answer

Bhadrabahu Swami and Varahamihira are remembered in Jain tradition as two highly learned brothers, but their spiritual directions became very different.

Bhadrabahu Swami became a great Jain Āchārya, known for deep scriptural knowledge, renunciation, and spiritual discipline. Varahamihira, though learned, is traditionally described as becoming proud of his knowledge and moving away from the Jain path.

    Story

According to Jain traditional accounts, Bhadrabahu Swami and Varahamihira were brothers. Both were intelligent and deeply educated.

Bhadrabahu Swami accepted Jain monkhood and became a highly respected Jain Āchārya. He is especially remembered in Jain history as a great scholar of scriptures and as a spiritually advanced monk.

Varahamihira, on the other hand, was also very learned, especially in astrology and worldly sciences. However, Jain tradition presents him as someone who became affected by pride and ego because of his knowledge.

A well-known traditional theme in their story is the contrast between:

    • Bhadrabahu Swami — humility, renunciation, right faith, scriptural wisdom
    • Varahamihira — intellectual brilliance, but mixed with pride and attachment

In some Jain narratives, Varahamihira is shown challenging or opposing Jain monks due to ego. Bhadrabahu Swami, however, remains calm, detached, and spiritually firm. Through this contrast, the story teaches that knowledge without humility does not lead to liberation.

    Spiritual Understanding

The story is not mainly about proving who was more intelligent. It teaches a deeper Jain principle:

    • Knowledge should reduce ego, not increase it.
    • True wisdom is joined with humility, restraint, and right conduct.
    • Worldly learning alone cannot purify the soul.
    • Spiritual knowledge must lead to detachment and self-discipline.

In Jain Dharma, Samyag Darshan — right faith — is essential. Even a very learned person may remain spiritually lost if knowledge is accompanied by pride, anger, deceit, or attachment.

    Takeaway

Bhadrabahu Swami represents true spiritual wisdom rooted in humility and renunciation. Varahamihira represents the danger of knowledge becoming a cause of ego.

    The lesson is simple:

Learning becomes meaningful only when it leads to humility, right conduct, and purification of the soul.
