During samvatsari how long should we perform pratikaman

    an hour ago 2

    Answer

During Samvatsari, one should perform the full Samvatsari Pratikraman as prescribed in one’s Jain tradition and guided by one’s Guru, Upadhyay, or local Sangh.

In practice, Samvatsari Pratikraman is usually longer than daily Pratikraman and may take around 2.5 to 4 hours, depending on:

    • Tradition: Śvetāmbara Murtipujak, Sthānakvāsī, Terāpanth, etc.
    • Language and method used
    • Speed of recitation
    • Whether explanations, stavans, or additional rituals are included

    Explanation

Samvatsari Pratikraman is not mainly measured by the clock. Its purpose is to sincerely reflect on mistakes committed during the whole year and seek forgiveness through:

    • Alochana – confession of faults
    • Pratikraman – turning back from wrong actions
    • Pratyakhyan – resolve to avoid faults in the future
    • Kshamapana – asking forgiveness from all living beings

If you are unable to sit for the full duration due to health, age, or genuine limitation, you should do it with as much sincerity as possible and follow guidance from a knowledgeable Jain teacher.

    Spiritual Understanding

The most important part of Samvatsari is inner purification. One should perform Pratikraman with humility, awareness, repentance, and the feeling of:

“Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṃ” — may all my faults be forgiven.

    Takeaway

Perform the complete Samvatsari Pratikraman according to your tradition. The time may vary, but sincerity, repentance, and forgiveness are most important.
