Should I a deravasi pratikamana, sthnakwasi pratikamana or a bhav pratikamana?

    Answer

You should do the Pratikraman that aligns with your Jain tradition and guidance from your Guru or family, but the most important thing is to do it with true bhāv—inner repentance, humility, and resolve not to repeat mistakes.

    So:

    • If you follow the Deravasi / Murtipujak tradition, do Deravasi Pratikraman.
    • If you follow the Sthanakwasi tradition, do Sthanakwasi Pratikraman.
    • If you are unable to do the full formal Pratikraman, then do Bhāv Pratikraman sincerely.

    Explanation

Pratikraman means turning back from faults and reflecting on wrong thoughts, words, and actions. Different Jain traditions have different recitation styles, texts, and procedures, but the purpose is the same:

    • To confess mistakes
    • To ask forgiveness
    • To reduce attachment and anger
    • To strengthen samyaktva and right conduct
    • To make a firm resolve to avoid future faults

If you already belong to a particular sampradāy, it is best to follow that method respectfully. If you are unsure, ask a knowledgeable Guru, sadhu-sadhvi, or trusted elder from your tradition.

    Spiritual Understanding

In Jain Dharma, the outer kriyā is important, but the inner bhāv is essential. A formal Pratikraman without awareness becomes mechanical, while even a simple Bhāv Pratikraman done with genuine repentance can be spiritually meaningful.

However, Bhāv Pratikraman should not be used as an excuse to avoid proper Pratikraman if you are capable of doing it. Ideally:

    • Do formal Pratikraman according to your tradition
    • Understand its meaning
    • Keep sincere repentance in your heart

    Takeaway

Choose the Pratikraman of your tradition, but make sure it is filled with true bhāv. The best Pratikraman is not only recited by the mouth, but felt deeply by the soul.
