    Science behind aathai

    4 hrs ago 3

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, Aathai means observing fast or special tapasya for 8 days, usually during Paryushan or other sacred periods.

The main purpose of Aathai is spiritual purification—reducing attachment to the body, controlling desires, practicing discipline, and focusing on the soul.

From a modern “science” perspective, fasting may support self-control, reduced food cravings, digestive rest, and mental discipline. But in Jainism, Aathai is not done mainly for health; it is done for atma-shuddhi—purification of the soul.

    Explanation

    Aathai has two dimensions:

    • Spiritual discipline: It trains the mind to rise above taste, hunger, comfort, and dependency on food.
    • Karma nirjara: Jain tradition teaches that tapasya helps in shedding previously bound karmas when done with right faith, humility, and inner purity.
    • Ahimsa: Eating less reduces involvement with food preparation and worldly activity, helping one practice greater restraint.
    • Mind control: Fasting gives an opportunity to observe thoughts, reduce passions, and increase prayer, samayik, pratikraman, svadhyay, and meditation.

From a bodily point of view, fasting may give rest to the digestive system and can strengthen discipline. However, the exact health effects differ from person to person, so Aathai should be done carefully, according to one’s physical capacity.

    Spiritual Understanding

In Jain Dharma, the real “science” of Aathai is the science of the soul:

    • The body asks for comfort.
    • The mind asks for taste and habit.
    • The soul seeks freedom from attachment.

Aathai teaches: “I am not merely this body. I am a soul capable of restraint, awareness, and purification.”

When Aathai is done with ego, comparison, or pride, its spiritual value reduces. When it is done with humility, devotion, forgiveness, and awareness, it becomes true tapasya.

    Takeaway

Aathai is not just “not eating for 8 days.” It is a sacred Jain tapasya for self-control, karma nirjara, ahimsa, and inner purification. Its deepest science is spiritual: conquering hunger, attachment, and passions to move closer to the pure nature of the soul.
