what is kayotsarg
Kayotsarg is an important spiritual practice in Jainism. The term "kayotsarg" is derived from two Sanskrit words: "kaya" (body) and "utsarga" (to relinquish or give up). Thus, kayotsarg literally means "giving up of the body" or "abandonment of the body."
In practice, kayotsarg involves standing or sitting motionless and withdrawing attention from the physical body to focus on the soul. It is a form of meditation where one maintains a posture without movement and cultivates a state of deep relaxation and detachment from the body and external surroundings. The goal is to transcend bodily sensations, reduce attachment to the physical form, and increase awareness of the soul's true nature.
Kayotsarg is often practiced during pratikraman (ritual repentance and reflection), samayik (periods of spiritual reflection), and other meditative activities. It is considered one of the key techniques for self-purification and for progressing on the path to liberation (moksha) in Jainism.
