why do we do a kausagg after Annattha Sutra

    2 hrs ago 2

    Answer

We do Kāyotsarg after the Annattha Sutra because the Annattha Sutra gives the proper inner condition for Kāyotsarg: remaining steady, detached from the body, and not breaking the meditation except for unavoidable natural or safety-related reasons.

    Explanation

Kāyotsarg means “giving up attachment to the body.” In this practice, one keeps the body still and turns the mind toward the soul, repentance, purity, and awareness.

The Annattha Sutra is recited before Kāyotsarg because it clarifies that during Kāyotsarg, one should not move or interrupt the practice unnecessarily. However, it also acknowledges certain unavoidable exceptions, such as:

    • natural bodily needs,
    • unexpected danger,
    • serious disturbance,
    • or situations where remaining still is not practically possible.

So, after saying Annattha Sutra, the devotee enters Kāyotsarg with a clear resolve: “I will remain steady and detached as far as possible, and I will not disturb this spiritual practice without valid reason.”

    Spiritual Understanding

In Jain Dharma, external stillness helps develop internal stillness. Kāyotsarg trains us to understand:

    • I am not the body; I am the soul.
    • Attachment to the body is a cause of bondage.
    • Equanimity and awareness purify the soul.

The Annattha Sutra prepares the mind for this by setting the discipline and exceptions before the meditation begins.

    Takeaway

We do Kāyotsarg after Annattha Sutra because Annattha Sutra prepares us to perform Kāyotsarg properly—with steadiness, discipline, detachment, and awareness of the soul.
