What does uttam kshama mean and what we do in it

    51 minutes ago 3

    Answer

    Uttam Kshama means supreme forgiveness.

It is the first of the Das Lakshan Dharma, observed especially during Paryushan / Das Lakshan Parva. In Uttam Kshama, we try to remove anger, ego, hatred, and revenge from our heart and develop true forgiveness toward all living beings.

    Explanation

    Kshama means forgiveness.

In Jain Dharma, forgiveness is not only saying “sorry.” It means:

    • Not keeping anger in the heart
    • Not wishing harm to anyone
    • Forgiving others who hurt us
    • Asking forgiveness from those we may have hurt
    • Becoming calm, humble, and peaceful

Uttam Kshama teaches that anger harms our own soul first. When we forgive, we reduce passions like krodh and move closer to inner purity.

What do we do in Uttam Kshama?

On this day, people usually practice:

    • Pratikraman – reflecting on mistakes and asking forgiveness
    • Michhami Dukkadam / Khamemi Savva Jive – seeking forgiveness from all living beings
    • Letting go of anger toward family, friends, and others
    • Speaking gently and avoiding harsh words
    • Meditation and self-reflection on forgiveness
    • Apologizing sincerely if we have hurt someone by thoughts, words, or actions
    • Forgiving others without revenge or bitterness

    Spiritual Understanding

In Jain Dharma, forgiveness purifies the soul. Anger binds karma, while forgiveness helps stop and shed harmful karmas.

    Uttam Kshama reminds us:

    • All souls are equal
    • No one should be hated
    • Peace begins inside us
    • True strength is in forgiveness, not anger

    Takeaway

Uttam Kshama means learning to forgive completely and ask forgiveness humbly. It helps us become peaceful, kind, and spiritually pure.
