What is choot and how to do it? Choot / Chhut in the sense of permission or exception in a vrat?

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, chhoot / chhut means a specific permission, relaxation, or exception taken while observing a vrat or spiritual rule.

It does not mean casually breaking the vrat. It means clearly deciding in advance that under certain limited conditions, a particular exception is allowed.

For example, if someone takes a vrat to avoid a certain food, they may take chhut for medicine, unavoidable travel, health needs, or a specific family situation.

    Explanation

A vrat is meant to increase:

    • self-control,
    • awareness,
    • discipline,
    • reduction of attachment,
    • and spiritual purity.

But householders may sometimes have practical limitations. Therefore, a person may take chhut so that the vrat remains realistic and honest.

    A proper chhut should be:

    • clear — exactly what exception is allowed,
    • limited — not broad or vague,
    • truthful — not used as an excuse for desire,
    • decided beforehand — not invented after breaking the vrat,
    • spiritually sincere — keeping the intention of the vrat intact.

    How to Take Chhut

You can take chhut in a simple and mindful way:

    • First, decide the main vrat clearly.
    • Then decide if any genuine exception is needed.
    • State the exception clearly in your mind, or before Guru Maharaj / elder / family if appropriate.
    • Keep the chhut as narrow as possible.
    • Do not use it for carelessness or indulgence.

    For example:

    • “I will not eat sweets, except if required as medicine.”
    • “I will not eat after sunset, except in a genuine health emergency.”
    • “I will do this vrat for one month, with chhut during unavoidable travel.”

    Spiritual Understanding

The purpose of chhut is not to weaken the vrat, but to make the vrat honest and sustainable.

In Jain Dharma, intention matters greatly. A strict vrat taken with pride or carelessness is not spiritually beneficial. A realistic vrat taken with humility, awareness, and sincerity can be very valuable.

Chhut should therefore be used with vivek — spiritual discrimination.

    Takeaway

Chhut means a clearly defined, sincere, and limited exception in a vrat. It should be decided beforehand and used only when genuinely needed, not as an excuse to satisfy attachment or taste.
