During the time of Bhagwan Mahavira (approximately 599–527 BCE), the Jain sangha (community) was not divided into separate gacha (sub-sects or lineages) as we see in later periods. The concept of gacha emerged much later, primarily during the medieval period as subdivisions within the Śvetāmbara sect.

During Mahavira's time, the Jain community was mainly divided into two groups:

1. Mūla Sangha (original community): The main undivided Jain monastic order.
2. Śramanas and Śrāvikas: The monks/nuns and lay followers.

The Śvetāmbara and Digambara sects, and further divisions into gachas, arose centuries after Mahavira. Therefore, there were no gachas during Mahavira Swami's time. The sangha was unified under his direct guidance and teachings.
