Whats the point of not brushing teeth with toothpaste during fasting

    2 hrs ago 5

    Answer

In Jain fasting, many people avoid brushing with toothpaste because fasting is not only about avoiding food, but also about practicing restraint, purity, and carefulness.

    Toothpaste is usually avoided because:

    • It has taste and flavor, which can stimulate attachment to taste.
    • Some toothpaste ingredients may be considered unsuitable during a strict fast.
    • There is a chance of swallowing a small amount, even unintentionally.
    • Brushing may involve unnecessary use of water and disturbance to tiny living beings.

    Explanation

In Jain Dharma, fasting is a form of tapasya—spiritual discipline. The aim is to reduce dependence on the body and senses, especially taste.

During a strict fast, one tries to avoid anything that gives sensory pleasure or could be counted as intake. Toothpaste usually has sweetness, mint, fragrance, foam, and chemicals, so it is avoided to keep the fast pure and disciplined.

Some people may rinse the mouth carefully with boiled/cooled water depending on the type of fast, tradition, and guidance of elders or guru. In stricter fasts, even this may be limited.

    Spiritual Understanding

The deeper point is not that toothpaste itself is “evil.” The point is:

    • to reduce attachment to taste, freshness, comfort, and habit,
    • to practice self-control,
    • to remain alert about even small forms of consumption,
    • and to make the fast more focused on the soul rather than the body.

    Takeaway

Avoiding toothpaste during fasting is a practice of discipline and non-attachment. The goal is to make the fast spiritually meaningful, not just physically difficult.
