Can any upvasi consume water quite earlier before sunrise by taking muthi pachkhan?

    12 months ago 169

In Jainism, during Upvaas (fasting), there are strict rules regarding the intake of food and water. Traditionally, Upvaasi (the person observing the fast) does not consume food or water from sunrise to sunrise—that is, for a 24-hour period, typically from sunrise of one day until sunrise of the next day.

Muthi Pachkhan is a special vow taken by some laypeople (Shravaks/Shravikas) where, due to health or unavoidable reasons, they take a limited and pre-measured amount of food or water, usually at a specific time and with a specific intention.

However, according to Jain Shastras and the guidance of Jain Acharyas:

    • The ideal Upvaas is to not consume any food or water, not even before sunrise on the day of breaking the fast.
    • If one needs to take water or medicine due to health reasons, it should be done after taking proper Pachkhan (vow), and ideally, this should be done after sunrise, not before.
    • Consuming water before sunrise, even with Muthi Pachkhan, is generally not permitted for those observing Upvaas, since the fast is considered complete only when nothing is consumed from sunrise to sunrise.

Exceptions: In case of emergencies or medical conditions, some sects and scholars may allow very limited intake of water (after Pachkhan), but this is considered a relaxation and not the standard practice. Even then, it is usually permitted only after sunrise, not before.

Conclusion: No, under normal circumstances, an Upvasi should not consume water before sunrise, even with Muthi Pachkhan. If there is a special case due to health, one must consult a Jain monk (Sadhu/Sadhvi) or a knowledgeable scholar for proper guidance and take the appropriate Pachkhan as per tradition.
