Can any upvasi consume water immediately after sunrise by taking muthi pachkhan? If navkarsi time is at 7.00 am and sunrise at 6.14 am then can upvasi consume water at 6.25 am?
According to Jain traditions, particularly those followed by Shwetambar sects, the rules for upvas (fasting) are very specific regarding when food or water can be consumed after completing a fast.
Navkarsi is the first meal taken after sunrise, but it is not simply based on the time of sunrise. The rule is that food or water can only be consumed after a minimum of 48 minutes (2 ghadi) have passed since sunrise. This 48-minute period is considered a time for spiritual reflection and not for consuming any food or water.
Muthi pachchhkan is a vow or resolution taken to consume only a handful (muthi) of food or water at a specific time, but it does not override the basic rule of navkarsi. That is, even with muthi pachchhkan, one cannot consume water or food before 48 minutes after sunrise.
In your example:
- Sunrise: 6:14 am
- Navkarsi time (after 48 min): 7:02 am
Therefore, an upvasi may NOT consume water at 6:25 am (which is only 11 minutes after sunrise), even by taking muthi pachkhan. Water can only be consumed after 7:02 am, after completing navkarsi.
