why there are tweo sects in jains, Digamber and swetamber

    an hour ago 4

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, the two main sects are:

    • Digamber
    • Shwetamber

They developed over time due to differences in monastic practice, scriptural preservation, and historical circumstances. Both sects worship the same 24 Tirthankars and follow the core Jain principles of Ahimsa, Aparigraha, Anekantvad, Karma, Moksha, and self-discipline.

    Explanation

The division is traditionally connected with a difficult historical period when Jain monks and communities became separated due to famine and migration.

According to Jain tradition, during a severe famine in ancient India, some monks migrated to the south, while others stayed in the north. Over time, because of distance and different living conditions, differences developed in practice and scripture traditions.

    The main differences include:

    • Monastic clothing: Digamber monks follow complete renunciation and traditionally do not wear clothes. Shwetamber monks wear white clothes.
    • Meaning of names: “Digamber” means “sky-clad,” symbolizing total non-possession. “Shwetamber” means “white-clad.”
    • Scriptures: Shwetambers preserve the Agam scriptures as their canonical texts. Digambers believe the original Agams were gradually lost and rely on later authoritative texts.
    • Idol appearance: Digamber idols are usually shown without decoration, with downcast or meditative eyes. Shwetamber idols are often shown with open eyes and may be decorated.
    • Views on certain doctrines: There are differences on topics such as whether women can attain moksha directly in female birth, and details about the life of Bhagwan Mahavir.

    Spiritual Understanding

Even though there are differences, both Digamber and Shwetamber traditions share the same spiritual goal: liberation of the soul from karma.

    Both teach:

    • Non-violence toward all living beings
    • Truthfulness and purity of conduct
    • Control of desires
    • Renunciation and detachment
    • Respect for Tirthankars and enlightened beings

The differences are mainly in external practices, scriptural traditions, and historical interpretations—not in the central purpose of Jain Dharma.

    Takeaway

Digamber and Shwetamber are two traditions within Jain Dharma that developed due to historical separation and differences in practice. But both are rooted in the same Jain path of Ahimsa, self-control, right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.
