avasarpini means what?
In Jainism, Avasarpini refers to the descending half of the cosmic time cycle (Kalachakra). According to Jain cosmology, time is eternal and is divided into two equal cycles: Avasarpini (period of decline) and Utsarpini (period of ascent).
During Avasarpini, there is a gradual decline in morality, happiness, lifespan, and spiritual capacities of living beings. It consists of six eras (aras), each progressively worse than the previous one. We are currently believed to be in the fifth era (pancham ara) of the Avasarpini.
In summary: Avasarpini = The descending half of the Jain time cycle, marked by decline and deterioration in the world.
