how can start fasting ? morning they do brush or not

    2 hrs ago 3

    Answer

In Jain fasting, you can start by taking a simple vow in the morning with a pure mind, according to your capacity.

    About brushing:

    • If you are doing complete fasting with only boiled water, many Jains avoid brushing after starting the fast, because toothpaste/powder and water use may disturb the strictness of the fast.
    • If you brush before taking the vow, early in the morning, some people do so according to family tradition.
    • For stricter fasts like Upvas, many follow the rule of not brushing, not eating, and only taking boiled water during the allowed time.

It is best to follow your family/guru tradition.

    Explanation

    To begin fasting:

    • Wake up early.
    • Do Navkar Mantra with devotion.
    • Take a clear intention: “Today I will observe this fast peacefully and with self-control.”
    • Avoid anger, lies, gossip, and unnecessary activities.
    • If your fast allows water, drink only boiled and cooled water during the proper time.

If you are new, start gently:

    • Navkarsi – eating after sunrise and Navkarshi time.
    • Chauvihar – no food or water after sunset.
    • Ekasan – eating once in one sitting.
    • Upvas – full-day fast, according to your strength.

    Spiritual Understanding

Jain fasting is not only about not eating. It is for:

    • controlling desires,
    • reducing attachment to taste,
    • purifying thoughts,
    • practicing self-discipline,
    • moving closer to the soul’s true nature.

    Takeaway

If you are just starting, do not force yourself. Begin with a small vow like Chauvihar or Ekasan, and ask your Jain elder, teacher, or guru about brushing rules followed in your tradition.
