How to measure effect of practicing aparigrah for 10 days on humans

    12 months ago 117

In Jainism, aparigraha (non-possessiveness or non-attachment) is a fundamental ethical principle. While Jain scriptures do not prescribe scientific measurement methods, they do describe spiritual, ethical, and psychological effects that can be observed by a practitioner.

To measure the effect of practicing aparigraha for 10 days, one can reflect on the following Jain perspectives:

    1. Self-Reflection (Swadhyaya)

Jain texts encourage daily self-examination. At the end of each day, reflect on:
    • Did you feel less attachment to material possessions?
    • Was there a reduction in desires or cravings?
    • Did you experience contentment with what you have?
    • Did you feel less disturbed by loss or gain?

    2. Reduction in Kashayas (Passions)

Aparigraha helps in reducing kashayas such as anger, pride, deceit, and greed. Observe:
    • Did you feel less anger or greed?
    • Were you less likely to compare yourself to others?
    • Did you experience fewer negative emotions tied to possessions?

    3. Increased Compassion and Non-Violence (Ahimsa)

As per Jain teachings, non-possessiveness leads to greater compassion:
    • Did you feel more empathy and willingness to share?
    • Were you able to avoid harm that arises from possessiveness?

    4. Simplicity and Peace of Mind

Jains believe aparigraha brings inner peace:
    • Did you feel more at peace or mentally uncluttered?
    • Was your daily life simpler and less stressful?

    5. Behavioral Observations

    • Did you give up unnecessary items?
    • Did you avoid accumulating new possessions?
    • Were you able to let go of attachments more easily?

    Suggested Practice:

Maintain a daily journal for 10 days, noting your thoughts, feelings, and actions related to the above points. At the end of the period, review your entries to assess changes.

Note: In Jainism, the true measure of aparigraha is the degree to which it helps purify the soul, reduce karmic bondage, and promote spiritual progress, rather than material or worldly outcomes.

By introspecting in these ways, you can gauge the spiritual and psychological effects of practicing aparigraha according to Jain principles.
