    paryushan 8 days menu

    12 months ago 2428

Certainly! Paryushan is one of the most important festivals in Jainism, characterized by deep spiritual reflection, fasting, and dietary restraint. Food during Paryushan is simple, sattvic, and strictly adheres to Jain principles:

    • No root vegetables (like potato, onion, garlic, carrot, etc.)
    • No green leafy vegetables after Chaturmas begins
    • No fresh fruits or vegetables plucked during Paryushan (some sects)
    • No fermented foods
    • No eating after sunset
    • No honey and eggs (Jain diet is strictly vegetarian)
    • Meals are often only once or twice a day and are very simple

Below is a sample 8-day menu for Paryushan. Please adjust according to your sect (Shwetambar, Digambar) and personal/family traditions.

    ---

    Day 1

    • Breakfast: Warm water, dry fruits (soaked overnight), plain khakhra
    • Lunch: Moong dal, laapsi (broken wheat), plain rice, plain curd
    • Dinner: (If taken) Simple dal-rice or just warm milk

    Day 2

    • Breakfast: Soaked almonds, dry coconut, plain sukhi puri
    • Lunch: Chana dal, steamed rice, bottle gourd (lauki) sabji
    • Dinner: (If taken) Milk or plain khichdi

    Day 3

    • Lunch: Simple dal, rice, turai sabji (if allowed), curd
    • Dinner: (If taken) Just warm water

    Day 6

    • Breakfast: Soaked figs, dry coconut
    • Lunch: Moong dal, rice, apple chutney (if fruits permitted), plain papad
    • Dinner: (If taken) Plain khichdi or warm milk

    Day 7

    • Breakfast: Roasted chana, almonds
    • Lunch: Chana dal, plain rice, turai or parwal sabji (if allowed)
    • Dinner: (If taken) Warm water or plain laapsi

    Day 8 (Samvatsari)

    • Breakfast: Minimum or none (many observe complete fast)
    • Lunch: Moong dal, plain rice, laapsi (very simple, limited)
    • Dinner: Typically, no dinner on Samvatsari as many break fast after Pratikraman and Kshamapana (forgiveness ritual)

    ---

    Note:

    • During Paryushan, many Jains also observe upvaas (complete fast), ekasana (one meal a day), or other forms of dietary restriction.
    • All meals should be cooked before sunset and consumed before sunset.
    • No food is consumed at night.
    • Use only permitted spices and avoid anything that may involve harm to microorganisms.
    • Always check with your family elders or community for any specific rules as practices can vary.

Paryushan is about simplicity, spiritual upliftment, and restraint. The less variety and quantity, the better for spiritual focus.
