How many types of praan are there
In Jainism, praan (prāṇa) refers to the vitalities or life-forces that sustain living beings (jīvas). According to Jain philosophy, there are ten types of praan (vitalities). They are:
- Panchendriya Prāṇa (Vitalities of the Five Senses):
1. Touch (Sparshan) 2. Taste (Rasan) 3. Smell (Ghran) 4. Sight (Chakshu) 5. Hearing (Shravan)
- Panch Indriya Prāṇa (Vitalities of the Five Powers):
6. Energy or Strength (Viryā) 7. Respiration (Shwās-Prashwās) 8. Life-span (Āyu) 9. Speech (Vāg) 10. Mind (Man)
Every living being possesses a combination of these vitalities, depending on its level of existence and development. For example, one-sensed beings (like plants) have only four prāṇas, while five-sensed beings with mind (like humans) have all ten prāṇas.
