How many aagam
In Jainism, the Āgamas (also spelled Agams) are the canonical scriptures of the Jain tradition. For the Śvetāmbara sect, there are traditionally 45 Agamas:
- 11 Anga Agamas (main canonical texts)
- 12 Upanga Agamas (subsidiary texts)
- 6 Chedasutras (disciplinary texts)
- 4 Mūlasutras (fundamental texts)
- 2 Chūlikasūtras (appendix texts)
- 10 Prakīrnaka Sutras (miscellaneous texts)
However, out of the 11 Angas, the Śvetāmbara Jains believe that only the first 11 are available today, as the twelfth Anga (Drishtivāda) is considered lost.
The Digambara sect, on the other hand, believes that all the original Agamas were lost over time and do not accept the current Śvetāmbara Agamas as authentic.
So, the number of Agamas depends on the sect, but traditionally, the Śvetāmbara tradition recognizes 45 Agamas.
