    upshray design and architecture

    12 months ago 359

In Jainism, an upashray (also spelled upashraya, upashray, or upasraya) is a residence or communal shelter primarily used by Jain monks and nuns (sadhus and sadhvis). It also serves as a center for laypeople to study Jain scriptures, meditate, and participate in spiritual activities.

Design and Architecture of an Upashray

    1. Simplicity and Austerity: The architecture of an upashray reflects the Jain principles of simplicity, non-possession (aparigraha), and non-violence (ahimsa). The design avoids unnecessary ornamentation and focuses on functionality.

    2. Layout:

    • Residential Quarters: Separate simple rooms (cells) for monks and nuns, often with basic amenities. Usually, there are no beds—just simple mats or platforms.
    • Common Hall: A larger hall for scriptural study (pravachan), meditation (dhyan), and community gatherings.
    • Kitchen (Jina-Shala): Sometimes, upashrays include a small kitchen, but meals are usually brought by lay followers as monks and nuns do not cook themselves.
    • Sanitation: Facilities for bathing and toilets, designed for strict hygiene and water conservation, as per Jain ethics.

    3. Orientation and Placement:

    • Designed to maximize natural light and ventilation, supporting health and comfort.
    • Often built near or adjacent to Jain temples (derasars) but kept distinct from the temple’s sacred space.

    4. Materials:

    • Constructed using non-harmful, eco-friendly materials, minimizing harm to living beings.
    • Flooring is commonly of stone or tile, easy to clean and maintain.

    5. Gender Segregation:

    • Separate sections or even separate upashrays for monks (sadhu upashray) and nuns (sadhvi upashray) to maintain celibacy and discipline.

    6. Accessibility:

    • Designed to be accessible for the elderly and disabled, as upashrays also serve laypeople during religious observances like Paryushana and Samvatsari.

    Cultural and Spiritual Significance

    • Center for Learning: Upashrays play a crucial role in the Jain community as centers for spiritual learning, scriptural study, and ethical discussions.
    • Community Hub: Serve as guesthouses for monks/nuns during their travels (vihara), and as venues for lectures and discourses (pravachan).
    • Discipline: The minimalistic design supports the vows of Jain ascetics, especially non-attachment and non-possession.

    Examples

    • In cities with large Jain populations (e.g., Ahmedabad, Mumbai), you may find upashrays of varying sizes, from small neighborhood facilities to large complexes attached to major temples.
    • Some upashrays, especially in the Śvētāmbara tradition, are architecturally iconic but remain internally austere.

In summary: The architecture of an upashray embodies Jain values of simplicity, non-violence, and community, providing a peaceful and functional environment for spiritual practice and ascetic life.
