    How to do samayik

    one year ago 615

Samayik is an important spiritual practice in Jainism, focusing on achieving equanimity and detachment from worldly affairs. Here are the general steps to perform Samayik according to Jain tradition:

    1. Preparation:

    • Choose a clean and quiet place.
    • Wear simple, clean clothes (ideally white).
    • Wash hands, feet, and face before starting.
    • Mentally prepare to stay in a state of equanimity for the duration (typically 48 minutes).

    2. Prayers and Resolve (Pratikraman):

    • Begin by reciting the Namokar Mantra.
    • Take a vow (samayik vrata) to remain in equanimity, avoiding attachment and aversion.

    3. Sitting Posture:

    • Sit in a comfortable, cross-legged position (Padmasana or Sukhasana).
    • Keep your spine straight and hands in your lap or on your knees.

    4. Practice of Equanimity:

    • Focus your mind away from worldly matters.
    • Avoid all sinful activities, harmful thoughts, speech, and actions.
    • Meditate on the soul's true nature, purity, and detachment.

    5. Activities During Samayik: You may do one or more of the following:

    • Recite Jain scriptures or stotras.
    • Meditate on the qualities of Arihantas, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upadhyayas, and Sadhus.
    • Perform pratikraman (reflection on past actions, repentance, and seeking forgiveness).
    • Chant mantras or perform silent meditation (dhyan).

    6. Conclusion:

    • End with the recitation of the Namokar Mantra.
    • Express gratitude for the opportunity to practice samayik.
    • Take a resolve to maintain equanimity and avoid sinful activities as much as possible in daily life.

    Key Points to Remember:

    • During Samayik, avoid speaking, eating, or doing any worldly work.
    • Maintain a peaceful and forgiving attitude.
    • The core aim is to cultivate inner peace, self-control, and purity of thought, word, and deed.

This is a general guideline; specific sects (Shwetambar, Digambar, etc.) may have slight variations in rituals or recitations. It is always recommended to learn Samayik under the guidance of a Jain monk or knowledgeable practitioner for proper understanding and practice.
