In Jainism, "punya" is commonly translated into English as "merit" or "auspicious karma." It refers to the accumulation of positive karma resulting from good deeds, virtuous actions, charity, compassion, truthfulness, non-violence (ahimsa), and other righteous conduct. Punya leads to favorable circumstances, happiness, and well-being in this life or future rebirths, according to Jain beliefs. However, Jainism also teaches that both punya (merit) and papa (demerit) are forms of karmic bondage, and the ultimate goal is to transcend both in order to attain liberation (moksha).
