how to take pachkan for sajala upvas

    one year ago 190

In Jainism, pachkan refers to a vow or resolve taken before observing certain spiritual practices like fasting (upvas). Sajala upvas means fasting with the intake of boiled water only during permitted times.

How to Take Pachkan for Sajala Upvas:

    1. Intention: With a pure mind, decide to observe sajala upvas for the day.
    1. Time: Pachkan is usually taken in the morning, before sunrise (or before the prescribed time for taking water).
    1. Facing Direction: Traditionally, face East or North while taking pachkan.
    1. Recite the Pachkan Statement: Use respectful and humble words, either in your native language or Prakrit/Sanskrit, to state your resolve. A common format is:

    > “Ichchhāmi nimammiṇijjāe sajala upvas viramāṇam samayāroppanam.” (I desire to observe sajala upvas with the prescribed rules for today.)

    1. Declare Restrictions: Clearly state the boundaries, such as:

    - I will not eat any solid or liquid food. - I will only consume boiled water, and only between sunrise and sunset (or as per your tradition’s rules). - I will avoid all forms of violence and observe spiritual activities.

    1. Mentally Offer Prayer: Bow to the Tirthankaras, seek forgiveness for past mistakes, and pray for spiritual strength.

    Sample Pachkan (in English):

    > "I resolve, for today, to observe sajala upvas. I will not eat any food and will only consume boiled water, that too only during prescribed times, until sunset. I seek forgiveness for any mistakes, and I pray for spiritual strength to complete this vow."

Note: In some traditions, pachkan is taken in front of a Jain monk/nun or an idol, but if that is not possible, it can be taken mentally or in front of a sacred space at home.

Final Step: At the end of the upvas, perform pratikraman and seek forgiveness for any lapses.

Important: The specific wording and details may vary by Jain sect (Shwetambar, Digambar, Terapanthi, etc.), so you may consult your local Jain center or family elders for the exact practice followed in your tradition.
