aghaati karma in english
In Jainism, Aghaati Karma refers to the "non-destructive" or "non-destructive karmas." These are the types of karmas whose effects do not directly affect the soul's inherent qualities permanently; instead, they affect the soul only during a particular birth (embodiment). Once the soul leaves the body, the effects of these karmas are no longer experienced.
There are four types of Aghaati Karmas:
- Naam Karma (Body-determining Karma): Determines the type of body, physical features, and structure.
- Gotra Karma (Status-determining Karma): Determines the social status or family into which one is born.
- Vedniya Karma (Feeling-producing Karma): Determines the type of feelings, pleasure or pain, that one experiences.
- Ayushya Karma (Life-span determining Karma): Determines the duration of one’s life in a particular birth.
In summary, Aghaati Karmas are "non-destructive karmas," affecting the soul during the current life, but not permanently altering its pure qualities.
