Has modern organised exhibitionist performative version of jain religion, moved us a little away from original thought and philosophy and all attention diverted to ritualism and subsequent exhibitionism

    Answer

Yes, this concern is meaningful from a Jain philosophical point of view.

Jain Dharma’s original emphasis is on:

    • Samyak Darshan — right faith
    • Samyak Jnan — right knowledge
    • Samyak Charitra — right conduct
    • Ahimsa — non-violence in thought, speech, and action
    • Aparigraha — non-possessiveness
    • Inner purification — reducing attachment, ego, anger, pride, deceit, and greed

If religious activity becomes mainly about display, status, decoration, competition, social image, or public praise, then it can certainly move attention away from the deeper purpose of Jain Dharma.

    Explanation

Jain rituals themselves are not the problem. Puja, pratikraman, samayik, tapasya, yatras, pravachan, and festivals can be powerful supports for spiritual growth.

The problem begins when the inner purpose is forgotten.

    For example:

    • Puja is meant to develop reverence for the qualities of Arihants and Siddhas, not to show wealth.
    • Tapasya is meant to weaken passions, not to increase ego.
    • Donation is meant to cultivate detachment and compassion, not social prestige.
    • Festivals are meant for self-reflection, forgiveness, restraint, and upliftment, not only grand arrangements.
    • Temple activities are meant to inspire purity, not competition between families or groups.

When the external form remains but the internal transformation reduces, religion becomes ritual-centered rather than soul-centered.

Jain Dharma has always warned against attachment, pride, and delusion. Even religious acts, if done with ego, can become a subtle form of bondage.

    Spiritual Understanding

In Jain philosophy, the value of an action depends greatly on bhav — the inner intention.

The same ritual can have different spiritual results depending on the state of mind:

    • If done with humility, devotion, awareness, and detachment, it supports purification.
    • If done with pride, comparison, anger, or desire for recognition, it may strengthen bondage.

So the issue is not “ritual versus philosophy.” Jain Dharma accepts meaningful ritual as a support. The issue is whether ritual leads us toward:

    • less ego, or more ego
    • less attachment, or more attachment
    • more compassion, or more social competition
    • inner discipline, or public performance

The original Jain path is deeply inward. It asks: “Am I reducing my passions? Am I becoming more non-violent? Am I less possessive? Am I more forgiving? Am I moving closer to the nature of the soul?”

    Takeaway

Modern organised and exhibitionist religion can move people away from the original spirit of Jain Dharma if external display becomes more important than inner purification.

But the solution is not to reject Jain rituals. The solution is to restore their true purpose.

A Jain practice is authentic when it increases:

    • humility
    • ahimsa
    • self-restraint
    • detachment
    • right understanding
    • purity of conduct

The real measure of Jain Dharma is not how grandly it is displayed, but how deeply it transforms the soul.
