In Jainism if one works out one's own liberation, why worship the gods?
Answer
In Jainism, worship is not done because gods or Tirthankars will “grant” liberation. Liberation must be attained by one’s own right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.
Jains worship Tirthankars, Siddhas, Arihants, and sometimes heavenly beings with a different understanding:
- To develop devotion and humility
- To remember the qualities of liberated souls
- To inspire oneself to follow the same path
- To reduce ego, attachment, and passions
- To purify one’s own thoughts and conduct
So Jain worship is not dependency. It is spiritual inspiration and self-purification.
Explanation
Jain Dharma teaches that no external being can remove our karma for us. Each soul is responsible for its own bondage and liberation. Even a Tirthankar shows the path but does not walk it on our behalf.
When Jains bow to Arihants or Siddhas, they are bowing to the highest qualities of the soul:
- Infinite knowledge
- Infinite perception
- Perfect conduct
- Freedom from attachment and hatred
- Complete liberation from karma
This worship reminds the devotee: “These pure qualities are also possible in my soul if I follow the path.”
In Jainism, worship is not mainly asking for favors. It is a method of inner transformation.
Spiritual Understanding
A simple example is this: a student studies the life of a great teacher not because the teacher will take the exam for them, but because the teacher’s example inspires discipline, clarity, and effort.
Similarly, a Jain worships the Jina not to escape personal responsibility, but to awaken personal responsibility.
The Jina is called “victor” because He conquered anger, pride, deceit, greed, attachment, and aversion. Worship means honoring that victory and trying to create the same victory within oneself.
Takeaway
In Jainism, gods are not worshipped as saviors who give liberation. The liberated ones are worshipped as perfect examples. Their worship purifies the mind, strengthens right faith, and inspires the soul to walk the path of liberation by its own effort.
