Will all jivas eventually attain liberation?
Answer
In Jain Dharma, not all jivas are guaranteed to attain liberation.
Every jiva has the inherent capacity to become liberated because the soul’s true nature is pure, conscious, and capable of infinite knowledge, perception, bliss, and energy. However, liberation depends on the soul removing all karma through right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.
Explanation
Jainism teaches that jivas are beginningless and are bound by karma due to passions such as anger, pride, deceit, greed, attachment, and aversion.
A soul attains moksha only when it:
- Develops samyak darshan — right faith
- Acquires samyak jnan — right knowledge
- Practices samyak charitra — right conduct
- Destroys all karmas completely
But many jivas remain wandering in samsara due to delusion and karmic bondage. Jain tradition does not teach that every soul will inevitably become liberated at some future time.
Spiritual Understanding
This teaching emphasizes personal responsibility. Liberation is possible for every soul, but it is not automatic. One must make conscious spiritual effort, practice non-violence, self-restraint, detachment, and purification of the soul.
Takeaway
Every jiva can attain moksha, but not every jiva will necessarily attain moksha. Liberation is possible through right spiritual effort, but it is not guaranteed for all souls.
