What happens after death
Answer
In Jain Dharma, after death the soul does not end. The soul immediately leaves the present body and takes another birth according to its karmas.
This cycle of birth, death, and rebirth is called saṃsāra.
Explanation
According to Jain philosophy:
- The soul is eternal.
- The body is temporary.
- At death, the body is left behind, but the soul continues its journey.
- The next birth is determined by the soul’s accumulated karmas.
A soul may be reborn in one of four states of existence:
- Deva gati – heavenly beings
- Manushya gati – human beings
- Tiryanch gati – animals, birds, plants, and other non-human life forms
- Narak gati – hellish beings
There is no permanent heaven or permanent hell in Jain Dharma. These are also temporary states, based on karma.
Spiritual Understanding
Jain Dharma teaches that death is not the final end; it is a transition. What truly matters is the condition of the soul and its karmas.
Good conduct, non-violence, truthfulness, self-control, compassion, forgiveness, and spiritual practice help the soul move toward liberation.
The ultimate goal is moksha, where the soul becomes completely free from karma and is never born again.
Takeaway
After death, the soul takes another birth according to karma. Jain Dharma encourages us to live carefully, peacefully, and spiritually so the soul can progress toward moksha.
