Why we are celebrating paryushan parv?

    12 months ago 159

Paryushan Parv is one of the most important and sacred festivals in Jainism. Jains celebrate Paryushan to purify their souls, seek forgiveness, and progress on the path of spiritual upliftment. The word "Paryushan" means "to stay close" or "to come together," reflecting the idea of coming closer to one's soul and spiritual self.

The main reasons for celebrating Paryushan Parv are:

    1. Self-Purification: It is a time for introspection, self-discipline, and penance. Jains focus on reducing their worldly attachments and passions (kashayas) to purify their soul.
    1. Atonement and Forgiveness: Paryushan is a period of seeking forgiveness (kshama) from all living beings for any harm caused, intentionally or unintentionally, through thoughts, words, or deeds. The festival culminates in the ritual of "Michhami Dukkadam," where Jains ask for forgiveness from everyone.
    1. Spiritual Practices: During Paryushan, Jains engage in increased spiritual activities such as fasting, meditation, reading of scriptures (especially the Kalpasutra for Shwetambar Jains), and listening to discourses.
    1. Observance of Jain Principles: The festival emphasizes the practice of the five great vows (non-violence, truth, non-stealing, celibacy, and non-possession) and encourages detachment from materialistic life.
    1. Remembrance of Tirthankaras: Jains remember and revere the teachings and lives of the Tirthankaras, especially Lord Mahavira, during this period.

In summary, Paryushan Parv is celebrated to promote spiritual growth, self-purification, forgiveness, and a deeper understanding of Jain principles.
