Jainism for beginners
Answer
Jainism is an ancient Indian spiritual tradition that teaches a path of non-violence, self-discipline, compassion, and liberation of the soul.
At its heart, Jain Dharma teaches that every living being has a soul, and every soul has the potential to become completely pure, free, and enlightened.
Basic Ideas of Jainism
- Ahimsa – non-violence in thought, speech, and action.
- Anekantavada – understanding that truth can have many viewpoints.
- Aparigraha – non-attachment and limiting possessions.
- Karma – karma is a subtle matter that binds to the soul due to passions and actions.
- Moksha – liberation from birth, death, and karma.
Who are the Tirthankars?
Tirthankars are enlightened spiritual teachers who show the path to liberation. Jain tradition speaks of 24 Tirthankars in the present time cycle.
The 24th Tirthankar is Bhagwan Mahavir, who taught the Jain path with great clarity through right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.
The Three Jewels of Jainism
Jain Dharma teaches that liberation is attained through:
- Samyak Darshan – Right Faith
- Samyak Jnan – Right Knowledge
- Samyak Charitra – Right Conduct
Together, these are called the Ratnatraya, or Three Jewels.
